Tawfiq Omrane

TAWFIQ OMRANE (Alias OMRANE CARTOONS)

Born in 1959 in Tozeur (Tunisia), Tawfiq Omrane is a professional editorial cartoonist and press illustrator. He started his career during the 1980s in the agonising repressive era of President Bourguiba. Many Tunisian independant and opposition opinion newspapers, now out of market, had hosted his satirical cartoons and drawings for 7 years, such as Phare, Arraï, Al Wehda and Al Mostaqbel… In 1987, Tawfiq Omrane was bound to put an end to his editorial work due the crack down on media by the regime of the former president Ben Ali who was responsible for the coup d'Etat staged in 1987. Consequently, he decided to make something else and started a career in advertising and cultural edition. His famous owl, cousin of the owl of Minerva, did not fly again until the fall of dictatorship in Tunisia in the night of January 14th, 2011. Meanwhile, Tawfiq Omrane participated in many collective exhibitions around the world : Tunisia Cameroun, France, Egypt, Algeria etc... Moreover, he was called upon to be responsible for the section «Dessin onlive». In December 2016, he participated in the Euro-Arab Summit organized by UNESCO in Paris with live cartoons. His works has made him earn the Académia Award for media freedom in 2014 in the Caricature section offered by the University la Manouba. He also published three books: «El Djerid Through its Jokes», «The Monitor», a small Comic Book and «15/15. Tunisia in drawings», a chronical book of four-handed chronicles published in 2016.
